| The modern and contemporary collection
of prints and drawings consists of approximately
12,000 units; it is hence the most comprehensive
one. Prints made using various techniques and numerous
drawings are kept, professionally treated and exhibited
in occasional exhibitions presenting either the
works by various authors or thematic or historic
and artistic phases. Since the early 1950, the beginning
of the operation of the Department of Prints and
Drawings as a separate institution, this Collection
has been the most comprehensive one, because the
founders of this institution had built it up with
the works of the living artists of that time; thereby,
the major part of the prints and/or drawings of
the modern and contemporary authors has been preserved.
By having decided upon the selective approach to
choosing the sheets to compose the Collection, the
latter had from its earliest days been built up
only with high-quality artistic sheets. In time,
the number of works comprised by the contemporary
collection had increased due to the persistent collecting,
buy-offs and donations over many years; therefore,
the Collection, which had initially been united
under the name of the Collection of 19th and 20th
Centuries, was two years ago separated from the
Collection of 19th Century, and renamed into the
modern and contemporary collection. In the recent
decades, the unit-based number of sheets of contemporary
authors, mostly prize winners at the prints or drawings
triennials, organised by our institution, has grown
considerably. The best represented authors are the
following Croatian artists, whose prints and/or
drawings are kept in the Collection: M. Kraljević,
