The Department of Prints and Drawings
Collection of Posters consists of more than two
and a half thousands inventory units.
Posters, original sketches and poster models are
kept in the Collection; they are professionally
treated and exhibited in occasional exhibitions
presenting either the works by various authors or
thematic or historic phases. The period of time
comprised by the Collection is rather long – between
the end of 19th century and the present. The Collection’s
oldest examples of posters are the ones made by
B. Csikos Sessia for two magazines: Mladost (1898)
and Urania (1900).
The Collection comprises the posters by the most
prominent Croatian authors and groups active in
this field, such as: R. Auer, T. Krizman, Lj. Babić,
M. Cl. Crnčić, O. Antonini, O. Postružnik, P. Gavranić,
S. Glumac, Atelier TRI, E. Murtić, I. Picelj, M.
Vulpe, M. Arsovski, B. Bućan, B. Ljubičić, A. Rašić,
and others. The Collection also includes a collection
of posters by artists from foreign countries, such
as: Germany, Austria, France, Great Britain, Poland,
the Czech Republic, and others. In the 1950s, in
the early days of the active Department of Prints
and Drawings operation, the Collection of Posters
was established by buying off the oldest and old
Croatian posters from the collector Dušan Plavšić.
The first exhibition of professionally and scientifically
treated posters from the Department of Prints and
Drawings holdings was The Poster in Croatia up to
the Year 1941, authored by R. Gothardi Škiljan and
mounted in 1974, which was, same as the exhibition
catalogue, of pioneer importance in the field of
the poster history research in Croatia. Since then,
the Department of Prints and Drawings has presented
itself to the public by organising many exhibitions
and publishing catalogues to the topic of posters,
such as: The Croatian Sports Poster 1906–1986 (1987),
The Tourist Poster in Croatia 1925–1988 (1988),
70 Years of the Film Poster in Croatia (1989), The
Croatian Theatre Poster – The Posters of the Croatian
National Theatre in Zagreb (1991), A Century of
the Political Poster in Croatia (1992), Masters
of the Croatian Poster: Pavao Gavranić and Sergije
Glumac (1994), A Century of the Croatian Poster
(2001), The Zagreb Fair Posters (2002), The Croatian
Sports Poster (2004), Pavao Gavranić – Works from
the Department of Prints and Drawings (2005).
